5 The Observer
The Gift of Seeking Wholeness through Observation,
Understanding & Isolation
5s Say: “I learn from observing or reading as opposed to doing. I dislike large groups or social events. Sometimes I can appear aloof, distant, or even arrogant. Having my own private space is very important to me. It's sometimes hard to express my feelings.”
Root Emotion: Fear
Needing their space and time to think, the 5 rewards us with wisdom and well-analyzed theories. However, they have the most held-back energy in the Enneagram system, often appearing to us as “aloof.” They ask many questions as they seek to develop theories about the world and say that the “aha” that comes with a puzzle solved creates another question. They do not appear to need others and call themselves minimalists. While strong attachments with a few people are clearly needed by 5s, they do not like to be in groups of strangers and often have to leave family gatherings after a few hours. Their engagement in life will depend on having enough of their own time and space. As minimalists, they will generally maintain a healthy lifestyle and remain slim. They are self-directed through thought and usually cut off from their feelings. A 5’s defense is to be disassociated from others and the world, sometimes totally withdrawn.
